Simple Ceremonies: The Power of Colors

“Color provokes a psychic vibration. Color hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body.” – Wassily Kandinsky

We’re surrounded by colors every day, but rarely do we think about the energy they bring into our lives.

Colors convey a variety of emotions and meanings. Each vibrates differently and sends a unique message through our eyes and into our existence. For example, a red rose means something different than a yellow rose. Oranges and yellows remind us of a certain season. A black suit with a red tie is considered a “power suit”

In addition to their physical properties, colors also have spiritual significance in many traditions and belief systems. Let’s look at the common spiritual meanings of various colors. (Note: The meanings can vary amongst countries and cultures)

Red is often associated with passion, will, energy, and life force. It is also a symbol of love and romance. In many cultures, red is also associated with courage, strength, and vitality.

Orange is often associated with creativity, enthusiasm, and joy. It is also believed to promote optimism and self-confidence. In some spiritual traditions, orange is associated with the second chakra, which governs creativity and sexuality.

Yellow is often associated with sunshine, warmth, and happiness. It is also believed to promote mental clarity and wisdom. In some spiritual traditions, yellow is associated with the third chakra, which governs action, personal power, and self-esteem.

Green is often associated with nature, growth, and healing. It is also believed to promote balance and harmony. In some spiritual traditions, green is associated with the fourth chakra, which governs love and compassion.

Blue is often associated with calmness, peace, and spirituality. It is also believed to promote communication and self-expression. In some spiritual traditions, blue is associated with the fifth chakra, which governs the throat and communication.

Purple is often associated with spirituality, intuition, and wisdom. It is also believed to promote creativity and inspiration. In some spiritual traditions, purple is associated with the sixth chakra, which governs the third eye and intuition.

White is often associated with purity, clarity, and spiritual enlightenment. It is also believed to promote healing and cleansing. In some spiritual traditions, white is associated with the crown chakra, which governs spiritual awareness and connection to the divine.

Black is often associated with mystery, power, and protection. It is also believed to promote grounding and stability. In some spiritual traditions, black is associated with the root chakra, which governs survival and physical security.

Using Colors In The Everday

We can use colors in many ways. They have both physical and spiritual significance. In our day-to-day life, we can consider the power of the color of our clothing to affect a mood or a personal message.

Spiritually, we can use colors to select candles, altar cloths, and other items that are part of sacred ceremony. In our home, the colors of the furniture, fabrics, and art we select will tell visitors something about who we are. When we apply the spiritual meanings of various colors to the things we wear, the actions we take, and the items we surround ourselves with, we move more intentionally toward creating a life we love living.
