The Season of Ripening: Let the Sun Make You Sweet

Simple Ceremonies with Ahriana Platten

There’s a hush in the garden this time of year.
Not silence exactly…
but a reverent stillness,
like the earth is breathing in perfect rhythm with all of life.

Leaves shimmer under the weight of full July heat.
Bees move slowly, drunk on nectar and golden light.
Tomatoes hang heavy on the vine, their skin stretched with promise.
Somewhere, a sprinkler hisses,
and a child’s laughter cuts through the air like the faintest windchimes.

It’s the season of ripening.

Not the planting, not the pushing,
but the soft middle part.
The part where everything swells and sighs and simply is.

This is my favorite time of summer.

The urgency has eased.
The sun, once fierce, has settled into a more generous glow.
The days are long with invitation.
To sit.
To sway.
To taste the juice of a peach running down your wrist and not wipe it away too quickly.
To lie in tall grass and watch clouds practice shapeshifting.

The warmth seeps into your shoulders, and undoes something tight around your heart.
You find yourself humming without realizing.
You forget to check the time.
You water the herbs barefoot, fingers scented with basil and mint.

This isn’t a productivity hack.
It’s not about self-improvement.
It’s about allowing.

The season itself is doing the work.
We’re simply being seasoned.

And what does that mean, really?

It means this might be the week to cancel the meeting.
To nap in a pool of specked sunlight on a  hammock beneath a dancing canopy.
To read the book with the cracked spine and nothing to prove.
To laugh until your ribs ache, not because anything is particularly funny,
but because you’re finally relaxed enough to feel joy when it shows up.

It means softening your grip on the steering wheel of your life.
Just for a while.
Just enough to let the mystery breathe inside you.

Because there’s magic here.

The kind that happens when a person stands still long enough to hear the breath again.
When one doesn’t fix, or force, or figure it all out.
When we let ourselves ripen in the holy heat of our own life.

You don’t have to do anything for this sweetness to come.
It’s already here, thick in the air like the scent of honeysuckle at dusk.
All you have to do…
is let it in.

So close your laptop.
Turn your face to the sky.
Feel the sun on your cheek,

And let the honeyed softness fill you!

You, beloved, are the true fruit of life.

Summer Peach & Rosewater Yogurt Cups

A cooling kiss of sweetness for your soul

This is the kind of dessert you can eat with bare feet in the grass, soft sunlight on your skin, and nowhere you need to be but here.
It’s quick, cooling, and soul-nourishing, like a whispered blessing in a bowl.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe peaches, sliced thin (or sub with nectarines)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosewater (just enough to hint at something divine)
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt or your favorite plant-based yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: crushed pistachios, toasted oats, dried rose petals, or mint leaves

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, toss peach slices gently with rosewater and half the honey. Let sit for 5–10 minutes to infuse and soften.
  2. In another bowl, mix the yogurt with vanilla and the remaining honey until smooth and lightly sweetened.
  3. Layer the peaches and yogurt into small glasses or bowls.
  4. Finish with a sprinkle of your chosen toppings—crushed pistachios for crunch, a mint leaf for cooling, maybe a few rose petals if you're feeling fancy.

Serve cold. Eat slowly.

And a Simple Ceremony to go with your dessert:

Before your first bite, hold the bowl in your hands. Close your eyes. Breathe in the scent of peaches and rose.

Whisper, I give myself time to ripen. I allow sweetness to find me.

And then, taste summer.
