Creating a Spacious Professional Life

Spiritual Business Success With Rev. Dr. Ahriana Platten

My word for 2024 is “Spacious.” I long for time between things to imagine, play, and relax. How about you?

“Spaciousness” is a concept that revolves around the idea of designing your work life to be more fulfilling, less stressful, and more aligned with your personal values and lifestyle goals. It's about creating a work environment that allows for growth, creativity, and personal well-being. Here are some key points to consider when striving for a professional life of spaciousness:

1. Prioritize Work-Life Balance

Set Clear Boundaries: Establish a strict separation between work and personal life. This might mean turning off work notifications after hours or having a dedicated workspace that you leave at the end of the day.

Take Regular Breaks: Integrate short breaks throughout your workday. Techniques like the Pomodoro method can be effective – work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break.

Quality Time Off: Ensure your vacations or days off are truly work-free. Use this time to recharge and pursue personal interests or spend time with loved ones.

2. Embrace Flexibility

Flexible Working Hours: Analyze when you are most productive and try to align your work schedule accordingly. Some people are morning persons, while others thrive in the evening.

Remote Work Options: Embrace the freedom of working from anywhere. This could mean working from a quiet café, a co-working space, or the comfort of your home, depending on what environment makes you most productive and happy.

3. Minimalism in Professional Duties

Streamline Tasks: Regularly review your tasks and eliminate or automate those that don't add value. Tools like project management software can help in prioritizing and organizing tasks.

Say No When Necessary: Develop the skill of saying no to tasks or projects that don't align with your professional goals or personal values. This helps in maintaining focus and avoiding burnout.

4. Continuous Learning and Growth

Invest in Yourself: Allocate time for professional development courses, workshops, or seminars. Staying updated with industry trends and skills is crucial.

Seek Challenges: Look for projects or roles that push you out of your comfort zone. This could mean taking on leadership roles or working on innovative projects.

5. Mindfulness and Reflection

Mindfulness Practices: Engage in daily mindfulness practices like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or even mindful walking. These practices help in maintaining a calm and focused mind.

Regular Reflection: Set aside time for weekly or monthly reflection. Assess your career path, personal growth, and how your work aligns with your life goals.

6. Nurturing Relationships

Professional Networking: Actively participate in industry events, online forums, or networking groups. These connections can provide support, knowledge, and opportunities.

Mentorship: Either find a mentor or be a mentor. This relationship can provide invaluable guidance, support, and a different perspective on your career and personal growth.

7. Health and Well-being

Physical Health: Incorporate physical activity into your routine, whether it's a daily workout, yoga, or just regular walks. A healthy body contributes significantly to a productive mind. Twenty minutes of movement every day will help you feel better.

Mental Health: Recognize the signs of stress and burnout. Don't hesitate to seek professional help if you're feeling overwhelmed. Mental health is as important as physical health.

8. Setting and Reviewing Goals

Set Realistic Goals: Create SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. This makes it easier to track progress and stay motivated.

Regular Reviews: Set aside time for regular check-ins on your goals. This could be monthly or quarterly. Adjust your strategies and goals as needed based on these reviews.

Creating a professional life of spaciousness take effort but allows you to enjoy what you do instead of rushing from one thing to the next at a break-neck pace. It requires regular self-assessment and adjustments to ensure that your work life not only contributes to your professional growth but also enriches your personal life.

Remember, the ultimate goal is to find a harmonious balance that allows you to thrive in both areas and live a life of ease, comfort, and happiness.
