In a world of diverse spiritual beliefs and religious traditions, it’s not uncommon for individuals to feel drawn to various aspects of different faiths. This practice of selectively embracing values from multiple religions, often referred to as “cherry-picking,” has sparked debates among scholars, clergy, and believers.
I have to admit, I’ve been a cherry-picker for more than 30 years.
Curating Spiritual Values
Cherry-picking allows individuals to curate their personal beliefs, choosing those values and practices that resonate deeply with them. This approach acknowledges that no single religion has a monopoly on truth and wisdom and that each spiritual tradition offers unique insights and teachings. By carefully selecting the values we align with, we create a mosaic of beliefs that reflect our own personal experiences and understanding of the world.
One of the most compelling arguments in favor of cherry-picking is the universal nature of many spiritual principles. The most used example of this is the ethic of reciprocity, which suggests we treat others as we wish to be treated. Stated in a variety of ways, this belief is found in numerous religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam. By cherry-picking this value, we cultivate compassion, empathy, and kindness, regardless of the specific religious path or tradition we follow.
Tolerance and Understanding
Another benefit to cherry-picking is that it promotes tolerance and understanding among different religious communities. By appreciating and incorporating values from various traditions, we develop a broader perspective and foster a sense of unity. When we recognize shared values across religions, it becomes easier to engage in meaningful interfaith dialogue and build bridges of understanding and respect.
Cherry-picking also allows individuals to evolve and adapt their beliefs over time. As we grow and change, our spiritual needs may shift, and what resonated with us in the past may no longer hold the same significance. By embracing the freedom to select and modify our beliefs, we ensure that our spiritual journey remains authentic and relevant to our personal growth.
Critics Disagree
Critics argue that cherry-picking dilutes religious traditions and undermines their integrity. They contend that adhering to a singular set of beliefs provides a stronger foundation for spiritual growth. While I agree with this perspective to the degree that a deeper study of any faith reveals more theological insights, it fails to acknowledge the rich diversity of human experiences and the unique paths that individuals undertake to accomplish spiritual expansion. One way to assure you truly understand the spiritual values of any religion is to study with a bona fide teacher from that religious tradition.
Be warned – not every spiritual educator is willing to honor your cherry-picking process. Some find it frustrating or even insulting.
Reflection and Discernment
Despite the opinion of critics, it’s been my experience that cherry-picking one’s spiritual values and beliefs encourages self-reflection and discernment, allowing individuals to critically evaluate religious teachings and embrace what truly resonates with them. Rather than blindly accepting dogma, cherry-pickers engage in a deeper exploration of their own spirituality, seeking wisdom from a variety of sources. This process fosters a personal relationship with the Divine that’s authentic and deeply meaningful.
